We can never fully escape the reach of the collective.

“Social media is something of a double-edged sword. At its best, social media offers unprecedented opportunities for marginalized people to speak and bring much needed attention to the issues they face. At its worst, social media also offers ‘everyone’ an unprecedented opportunity to share in collective outrage without reflection.”

  1. I love the photo, Mia. It’s perfect for the topic. Social media. Don’t get me started. I don’t participate. Except for blogging, a linked in account, and google account for reasons that mostly work related, I have no other social media accounts.

    1. Thanks, Tim, glad you like the photo. It does fit the topic, I think I took it last year. Those little guys like to build their temporary homes under the eves of the house. I just leave them alone, occasionally one will get in the house and then it’s free for all for the cats, until I can shoo it outside again. As for social media, really I hear you.

  2. Your quote holds a nice chill ~ a bit uncomfortable. “We can never fully escape the reach of the collective” I may have to use this in the future 🙂 Wonderful photo, another of your talents we’re all happy to see displayed. Wish you a perfect day.

    1. Hi Randall, the idea of the collective is enormous, quite the umbrella. I think it’s fair to challenge the idea of ‘the collective’. While there’s safety in numbers, or so we think, the collective starts to blot out the identity of the individual and erodes the unique voice of its members/captives. Thank you for your kind words. Wishing you a perfect day as well, although I imagine you’re coming to the end of yours. Take good care. ~ Mia

  3. I have dipped my toes into a couple social media sites but kept them private so only people I really want as friends can connect with me. And (to my consternation) sometimes it’s the only way to ‘follow’ an author/artist/musician that you like! Love your choice of photo!

    1. Hi Stories, I agree. I think when ‘the collective’ or any other body of advantage, means and power, steps away from altruism, that’s perhaps when we see the negative side of what could otherwise be an amazing entity. Thank you so much, it’s so nice to see you here. Enjoy your evening. ~ Mia

  4. In the social media hive
    a drone with the drive
    to more than just survive
may sit upon a cyber throne.
    As facebook takes a dive
    like a rolling stone
    with no direction home
    the flowing honey
    of excellence & meritocracy

  5. Mia, digging the photo and how much you were able to say in ten words. Social media? Rrrrr… I’m still challenged by group texts so you can see how much I participate in those “collectives.” Have a great week. -Chris

    1. Hey Chris! I’ve been sitting on that photo for a while now, thank you. It worked out well with the ten words. Social media, Iikewise, Rrrrr… I don’t go all out, that’s for sure. Hope you’re enjoying your week. Take care. ~ Mia

  6. Interesting thought (and photo)
I’m not even sure the term “social media” is accurate. It was coined at the very beginning but does it really covers what goes on.
Example: are you and I right now in a “social media”?
    Je ne sais pas.
    Night night

    1. Hi Brian, maybe it’s not the best term, so much has evolved. For me, most of my interactions on WP have been good, it’s just the few not so good ones I don’t mind using the label, “social media”. I hope you’re enjoying your evening, have a good weekend. ~ Mia

    1. Thank you, Eugenia. Social Media as with most all things, offers the good and the bad. Oh, I so agree, moderation is the key. The thing that really grabbed me about the quote was the following, “…to share in collective outrage without reflection.” Mob mentality at its best, I think the flip side of the coin can be frightening. Wishing you a terrific evening, and have a wonderful Tuesday. Take good care. ~ Mia

  7. Heyyyyy Mia, great post. Your 10 liner says it all. Completely agree. And that quote is so right on. Especially the last part of it. People are so easily persuaded to ‘go with the flow’. I remember when I was younger and didn’t think much. Just jumped on the wagon (so to speak). Social media is actually a scary thing when you think about it. It certainly offers some benefical opportunities, but can do some serious damage as well. Especially when it comes to worldviews and ‘created truths’ (as if truth could be created). My time is very limited so I don’t get a lot of opportunities to spend time on social media. I’m thinking that’s a good thing. Haha.
Hope you’re having a great day.
    🙂 ❤

    1. Staci, thank you for a marvelous comment. Perhaps ‘jumped on the wagon’ has something to do with youth. And as I think about it, the ideas and philosophies that match my internal workings took time to develop and for me to be comfortable standing on my own two feet with my own beliefs, not bending to others. I think we grow into ‘sure and steady’. As for social media, like all things has the good, the bad, and the very, very bad. The very, very bad is a nasty things that most of us can do without, and do our best to avoid. It’s wonderful to see you, I hope that things are settling down now and we will get to enjoy a post from you soon. I hope it’s been a good Friday for you so far, and please have a fantastic weekend, my friend. ~ Mia 🙂 💗
